Modern-Day Slavery: How Many Enslaved People Are Working for You?

A Grim Reality We Must Confront

Modern-day slavery is a difficult and painful subject to address. However, the harsh truth is that we are all interconnected with it, whether through the clothes we wear, the food we eat, or the gadgets we use. This International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, it’s time to confront this uncomfortable reality.

The Scale of the Problem

Modern slavery is a growing crisis includes:

  • 24.9 million in forced labor
  • 15.4 million in forced marriages

Children make up one in four victims, and modern slavery affects 5.4 victims per 1,000 people globally.

Breakdown of Forced Labor

  • Sixteen million face exploitation in the private sector (domestic work, construction, agriculture).
  • 4.8 million endure forced sexual exploitation.
  • Four million are subjected to forced labor imposed by state authorities.

The Financial Drivers of Modern Slavery

Modern slavery generates an estimated $150 billion annually in profits. This profitability makes it incredibly challenging to address, as monetary incentives often outweigh moral concerns.

Where Is Modern Slavery Most Prevalent?

The Global Slavery Index highlights the ten countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery, underscoring how global crises—conflicts, environmental degradation, climate-induced migration, erosion of women’s rights, and economic fallout—exacerbate the issue.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

This International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, let’s commit to becoming part of the solution, not the problem. Together, we have the power to change lives and reshape our world.
